Chief Poundmaker School's Grade 11 and 12 students and teachers, as well as Elder Vera Weenie-Kasokeo, attended an informative presentation held in Onion Lake First Nation at Eagleview High School Jan. 14.

In 1913, Grand Central Station in New York opened and it was the first year they began putting prizes in the Cracker Jack boxes. It was also the year Freda Wright was born 17 miles west of Unity on NE 1-40-25-W3rd, delivered by Dr. Routledge.

Mid-January do you have the mid-January blues? I always feel the most melancholy right after Christmas and now, as I see the days getting moments longer each day, I feel happy.

The Maymont Settlers Senior Hockey team added a new player to the roster for three of their regular scheduled games.

At the Radisson Royal Purple meeting Jan. 7, held at the home of Roberta Harris, the Lodge donated $50 to the Hafford and District Music Festival. Happy birthday was sung to Ellen Cousins, Linda Yuskiw and Lorraine Olinyk, all with January birthdays.

Dec. 19, the Speers branch of Lakeland Library held an open house from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with 12 people attending. Colleen Wicks, local librarian, served coffee, punch and cookies and had decorated the library for Christmas.

Congratulations to the winners of the Christmas lighting contest for the village of Neilburg. Taking first place were Julie and Marty Bowes. Second place winners were Darwin and Diahann Urlacher. The third place winner was Donna Schmidt.

December was a busy month at Battlefords District Care Centre. Schools performed, carollers came to sing, Christmas light tours took place and the annual Christmas parties brought families and fun.

Happy New Year from the Rivers' Edge Quilters to you. We are starting 2013 with a bang. Classes include Circle Around, the Celtic Knot and a special Louise Day. Louise was one of our founding members and she recently lost her husband.

Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club held their annual Christmas potluck and cookie making day in Blaine Lake, Dec. 16. It started off with a yummy Christmas lunch enjoyed by members and families, and then all the members had to get to work.
