The 2011 club volleyball season was a solid one for the Battleford Ballistic 18U boys' team representing the Battlefords and area. Ten young men competed around the province at various tournaments.

June 25 was a day to remember for Jordan Fransoo. The North Battleford product and current Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) defenceman was taken in the 7th round (186th overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft.

The Unity Midgets finished out the regular Battlefords and District Ladies' Fastball League regular season on top of the standings. Battleford Midgets were second, with the Jr. Vipers third and Edam Ladies batting cleanup.

For many aspiring hockey players, the route to a possible stay in the NHL begins in their home towns, followed by scholarships, stays in the WHL, and so on.

The Humboldt Under-16 Hurricanes stormed through their opposition recently at the Saskatoon Eastside Grevers' tournament, coming away as Division III champions. The Eastside Grevers' tourney took place June 17-19.

Hugh Carr, a Notre Dame Hounds pitcher, is being inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame. Born Hugo Raymond Dombowsky, Oct. 13, 1929, he died Hugh Carr, Nov. 16, 1972. He grew up in Avonlea.

The Battlefords Ladies' Fastball League was in action three nights this week, making up games to tie up the regular season, with playoffs slated to start Monday. Monday night the Unity Bantams 2 slugged out an 8-3 victory over the Survivors.
