Remembrance Day commemorations

The Assiniboia and District Remembrance Day commemoration was held at the St. George’s Catholic Church Hall on November 11. Members of the Assiniboia Chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion entered the hall in procession to begin the event.

The program, which was emceed by Irvin Tubbs, included a reading of the well-known Remembrance Day poem called “In Flanders Fields” by high school student Christina Franks, Scripture readings by Rev. Marilyn Leuty, Pastor Nick Franks, Fr. Dennis Remot and Rev. Doug Miner, a call to worship and invocation by Pastor Marlin Juell, an address by Rev. Greg Dermody, leading of prayer by Rev. Bob Scott and the benediction by Raymond Mynett.
Wreaths were laid by community members representing local organizations, businesses, schools, the rural municipalities, the RCMP, the Town of Assiniboia, and the federal and provincial governments. David Leuty played the Last Post and two minutes of silence was marked at 11 a.m. to remember the fallen, followed by the Reveille played by Leuty. Rita Walters read the names of the fallen from Assiniboia and district.
The Eastside Court residence held a Remembrance Day service led by Pastor Greg Dermody on November 10. The residents read poems, sang hymns and observed two minutes of silence. Maria Tubbs and Carolyn Henderson attended from the Legion.
