In the summer heat and within your busy work schedule you may be finding it hard to relax or stay in shape.

Garth Herman will hold an introductory Tai Chi and Qigong class at 7 p.m. starting July 30 at Carlyle United Church, located at 200 2nd Street West.

"I have been practicing Tai Chi on and off for 20 years now. I began in Regina, when David Corbin was down there. I was intrigued by it because unlike Karate where you block, in Tai Chi it's like you are not there," said Garth Herman.

The cost for the class is $40 per adult for the summer, $50 for a family and merely $10 for students and seniors. The introductory course will be led by Herman himself and will meet weekly on Mondays.

"The focus now will be on healing opposed to focusing on the martial arts side. Tai Chi stimulates body parts most effective to physically getting into better shape, which in effect will make you in better emotional shape as well. Same stimulus as acupuncture as well as the same energy," he said.

Tai Chi, as it is practiced today, can be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. Many forms of Tai Chi consist of a sequence of movements originally derived from the martial arts and from the natural movements of animals and birds. The way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them.

The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been said to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive function.

Recent studies have also proved that Tai Chi boosts your brain functionality and memory, so how could you go wrong?

"Just wear something comfortable, nothing else is really needed" instructed Herman.

Don't forget your runners and water, and remember to dress in loose fitting clothing.
