Fraudulent scam, thefts and mischief investigated

During the week of May 23-29, 125 complaints were handled by members of the Weyburn Police Service, including mischief, fraud and theft. Once again telephone, mail and internet scams seem to be prevalent.

Once again telephone, mail and internet scams seem to be prevalent. What's commonly known as the Grandparent Scam has again been reported. In the most recent case a local resident was contacted by a suspect posing as a grandchild. They claim that they are in jail and want bail money sent to them via a money transfer. In another case an online sales complaint resulted in a local resident being paid for sold merchandise with a counterfeit money order. Residents are reminded to be very cautious and report and suspicious activity to police.

Bicyclists are out in full force and share many of our streets with automobiles. Traffic laws have to be obeyed by cyclists to help ensure safety. Many bikes are reported stolen and some are later found. License and lock your bicycles.

Skateboards aren't allowed to be used in the downtown area. Skateboarders are encouraged to use the skateboard park located at the Weyburn Youth Centre.

On May 23, there were several reports of items being stolen from vehicles. Residents are reminded to not leave valuables in their vehicles and make sure their doors are locked.

Police were called to investigate a report of as stolen vehicle, the matter is under investigation.

Also on May 23, police were called to investigate a report of theft of money from a residence. The matter is under investigation.

City police were called to investigate a theft of a Canon Power Shot camera from a parked vehicle on May 25. The matter is under investigation.

Police were called on May 25 to investigate a complaint of threats being posted on a social media Internet site. The matter is under investigation.

Police were called to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle on May 25. The vehicle was located a short time later and it was determined it had not been stolen.

City police were called to a local store to investigate a shoplifting complaint. A local young offender was arrested and charged.

The same day, police received a complaint regarding harassing phone calls. The matter was settled without further incident.

A complaint was received of mischief at a local school on May 26. The matter is under investigation.

On May 26, police were called to a local bar to remove an intoxicated patron. The patron was driven home.

City police were called on May 27 to a landlord-tenant dispute; the matter was resolved without further incident.

Also on May 27, police were called to investigate a complaint that local kids were getting into a secured city property. The matter is under investigation.

Police arrested and charged a local male with driving while over .08 on May 27. He will be appearing in court in July.

City police were called on Saturday to a domestic disturbance and assault. A local Weyburn male was arrested and charged with assault.

Police were called on Saturday to investigate a report of trespassers on CP Railway property. The matter is under investigation.

City police were called on Sunday to investigate a report of mischief to a parked vehicle. The suspect had thrown a bicycle on to the vehicle. The matter is under investigation.

Police were called on Sunday to assist looking for a young male who had not returned home. Shortly after receiving the call the child was located.

On the May 28-29 weekend, several liquor-related traffic tickets were issued and calls involving alcohol were attended. Residents are reminded that if they have consumed any amount of alcohol not to drive a motor vehicle. Also this past week several tours of the police station and cars were given to local children.

During the week of May 15-22, Weyburn Police Service received 130 calls for service. As a result of the weather warming, house and yard parties increased. Citizens are reminded there is a noise bylaw and often these parties are an irritant to other neighbours.

On May 15, police responded to a call in the Souris Valley area. Kids playing with pellet guns were suspected to have shot at some older ladies sitting outside. Suspects had fled the area.

Also on May 15, police apprehended an impaired driver. As a result of the investigation the accused was charged.

A citizen reported someone entering vehicles with the intent to steal property; the culprit was found inside vehicles in the Hartney Bay area on May 16.

City police were called to a domestic violence situation on May 16. A male resident was arrested and charged for assault and breaching conditions on a recognizance.

Also on May 16, police entered into another domestic investigation. Threatening messages were being sent and received by people involved in the situation.

City police responded to investigate a trailer that had been damaged on May 17. A person dented the roof of the trailer. There are no suspects at this time.

On May 18, police investigated an incident of theft from the Wholesale Club. The investigation is ongoing.

The police investigated a weapons complaint on Thursday. The complaint involved young offenders; the incident was resolved without charges.

City police attended a traffic accident in the Wholesale parking lot on Saturday. The driver of one of the vehicles involved was found to be impaired by alcohol. After the subject provided breath sample for analysis he was charged for impaired driving and for being over 80 milligrams of alcohol.
