ESTEVAN - The Estevan Police Service has announced an arrest and charges in connection with the theft of a vehicle that occurred on Sunday.

Dakota Dillon James Button, 18 years of age, is facing three charges: theft of an automobile, failing to stop for police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. All charges are under the Criminal Code.

He also has a number of charges from the Regina Police Service.

His next court appearance will be on Dec. 19.

The vehicle was stolen from an Estevan service station and was towing an ice shack. The vehicle was located a short time later as it lost control and the ice shack rolled. Police, through investigation, determined the individuals responsible for the theft drove up to the gas station in what they believed to be a stolen auto from Pilot Butte.

Police have since learned that the vehicle has been involved in a number of incidents in Weyburn in the afternoon.

The Regina Police Service says early in the morning of Dec. 12, they reported seeing what they described as a unique-looking yellow Kia Seltos that matched the description of a stolen vehicle reported earlier.

“It appeared the vehicle had been abandoned, but as a different canine unit approached, two male suspects exited the vehicle and started running,” said RPS in a media release. Despite several warnings to stop, the two men continued to run from police.

“The canine officer sent his dog to apprehend the driver and radioed a description of the second male suspect to other units,” RPS said. “The dog pursued the driver and detained him (making contact by bite) until the officer was able to successfully arrest the male.”

The second suspect was arrested while trying to catch a taxi.

“It’s alleged this individual was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and shotgun ammunition,” RPS explained. “Both males face criminal charges as a result of the investigation.”

Button faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition; possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace; careless use of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle; possession of a loaded firearm; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (vehicle); and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (licence plate).

Punnichy-area resident James Elias Jeremiah Cyr, 20, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (vehicle); and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (licence plate).

Both Cyr and Button made their first court appearances on these matters on Dec.12.
