SaskPower urges farmers to stay safe during harvest

With swathing, combining and baling dominating the thoughts of people in rural Saskatchewan, SaskPower urges farmers to remember the power lines overhead.

"With harvest underway, it's important for farm families to put safety first, especially when working around overhead power lines," said Rob Norris, Minister responsible for SaskPower. "Taking the time to plan what you're doing and where you're going can literally save lives."

While most of Saskatchewan's farmers know their land like the back of their hands, they need to always stay mindful of the power lines on their property, according to SaskPower President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Watson.

"It's important to remember that this is a risk that never goes away," Watson said. "It only takes a moment of complacency, and when people are overworked and under pressure, it's easy for accidents to happen."

To make sure the farming season is safe and productive, SaskPower urges farmers to keep the following safety tips in mind:

Plan a safe route around overhead lines and power poles, and make sure everyone working with you is aware of this route and the location of potential dangers.

Lower equipment before moving it and watch out for power lines when carrying tall equipment like ladders.

Never attempt to trim trees or remove downed branches lying on top of lines.

Stay at least 30 metres away from downed power lines. The surrounding area could be electrified.

Locate grain bins, haystacks, barns and other structures at least 15 metres (50 feet) away from power lines

If your vehicle contacts a power line, stay inside of it and call SaskPower (310-2220) and 9-1-1 for help. Remember to carry a communication device on you at all times when out in the field.
