Swift Current RCMP have laid charges in a fraud investigation after the 2019 arrest of an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada researcher.

SWIFT CURRENT — Swift Current RCMP have laid charges against a federal employee following an almost two-year fraud investigation.

The RCMP's National Security Enforcement Section started its investigation in February of 2018, which concluded on Nov. 19, 2019 with simultaneous searches and the arrest of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada employee Yantai Gan, 65, of Kelowna B.C.

Gan, who was employed as a researcher at the time of his arrest, was taken into custody during an executed search warrant at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's facility in Swift Current. A second search warrant was simultaneously conducted at a residence elsewhere in the city at that time.

Gan has now been charged with one count each of breach of trust by a public officer, fraud over $5,000 and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000.

RCMP did not provide any further details regarding the nature of their investigation, and have declined to comment as the matter is now before courts.

Gan will make his next appearance in provincial court on these charges in Swift Current on Dec. 13.
