Skydiving club moves to Weyburn Airport for summer

WEYBURN – Skydive South Sask, a volunteer non profit skydive club that operates out of Moose Jaw Municipal airport, temporarily relocated to the Weyburn Airport for May and June, while the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport underwent expansion.

There were no injuries in a large fire at the Canadian Tire store in Weyburn on April 28, with damages pegged at over $100,000.

Fillmore student Jay Boll received the University of British Columbia Centennial Scholars Entrance Scholarship for $80,000.

Jessica Baumgartner, a Grade 11 student from Stoughton Central School, shared her ideas on how to create positive change in the world on May 13, as she competed in the 10th annual Speaker’s Idol final, as one of six high school students in the annual speech competition hosted by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, and she placed third.

Fourth-year player Kate Goranson of the Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings was named the recipient of the Carol Scheibel Scholastic Player of the Year award by the Saskatchewan Female Under-18 AAA Hockey League.

A pilot program was developed in conjunction with Hockey Canada, and was set to be offered in two schools in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division, at St. Michael School in Weyburn and Sacred Heart School in Estevan for the 2021-22 school year.

Hailey Neiszner, a hairstylist student at the Weyburn campus of Southeast College, won bronze in the Virtual Saskatchewan Skills Canada competition.

The Weyburn Review and Weyburn This Week newspapers won several awards in the annual Better Newspaper Awards presented by the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA) for 2020, including two first-place awards.

Mike Weger won a 2021 SHA Award as Volunteer of the Year - South from the Saskatchewan Hockey Association.

Three recipients of the Millie Coghill Fine Arts Award were named by the Weyburn Arts Council for 2021, including Jillian Harder, Kristen Fortune and Darcy Klein, with each awarded $500.

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame announced eight new inductees as the Class of 2021, including Fillmore’s Rod Boll, who was an Olympic trapshooter and Canadian champion.

Saskatchewan reached the Step Two threshold on the Re-Opening Roadmap as of May 25, with over 70 per cent of residents age 30 and older having received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, so Step Two was set to start on June 20.
