Atom teams compete in Estevan tournament

The Estevan Minor Hockey Association’s annual atom house tournament attracted 12 teams to the Estevan area. Games were played from Friday to Sunday at Affinity Place, the Power Dodge Ice Centre and the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

The Estevan Minor Hockey Association’s annual atom house tournament attracted 12 teams to the Estevan area.

Games were played from Friday to Sunday at Affinity Place, the Power Dodge Ice Centre and the Bienfait Memorial Arena.

The Estevan Kings won the A event consolation final with a 3-2 victory over the Assiniboia Rebels. The Kings went 2-0 in the round-robin, defeating the Oxbow Huskies 17-1 in their tournament opener and the Prairie Storm Thunder 3-2.

Then they lost 9-2 to the Russell Rams in the semifinal, placing them in the A event consolation final. The loss to the Rams was the Kings second defeat this season.

In the C event final, the Estevan Predators blanked the Estevan Leafs 3-0.

The Predators lost 5-1 to the Prairie Storm Cyclones to open the tournament, but then responded with a 5-4 victory over the Yorkton Terriers. All three teams in their pool had 1-1 records, but the Predators wound up third because of goals against.

Then they defeated the Strasbourg Maroons 6-1 in the C event semifinal.

As for the Leafs, they lost 5-3 to the Prairie Storm Lightning and 8-2 to the Rams in the round robin. Then they defeated the Huskies 9-3 in the other semifinal.

The Rams defeated the Yorkton Terriers 4-1 in the A final.

In other results, the Regina Panthers beat the Prairie Storm Thunder 6-4 to win the B final, the Prairie Storm Cyclones defeated the Prairie Storm Lightning 3-1 in the B consolation final, and the Oxbow Huskies edged the Strasbourg Maroons 6-5 in the C consolation final.

“There was some pretty competitive hockey out there,” said Sheldon Beatty, who was involved with the tournament. “Lots of comparable teams. It didn’t matter what team showed up. The Predators beat the Yorkton Terriers and the Terriers made it to the A-side championship game.”
