Big win for Oxbow in Big Six Hockey League

A short-staffed Oxbow Huskies team surrendered quite a few goals in a game last month and they proved Friday they can also score a bunch. The Huskies won 10-4 over Kipling/Windthorst in one of the Big Six Hockey League games over the weekend.

Oxbow exploded out to a 5-0 lead after the first period thanks to five different goalscorers. They were up 9-3 after the second period. Taysen Holt and Levi Barnstable led the charge offensively with two goals and two assists each in the game.

Steven Henderson, Reed Loucks, Riley Spearing, Derek Cooney, Kolby Fleury and Mike Bayda also each scored in the game. Blake Nicholson scored a pair for Kipling/Windsthorst and Aaron Roth and Brandon Munro got the other goals.

The Redvers Rockets beat the Midale Mustangs 6-1 on Friday thanks to two from Drew Hoff and four other different marksmen. Brady Gaudet, Kenton Miller, John Potapinksi and Koltymn Miller each scored for the Rockets. Adam Ziegler got the only goal in the game for Midale.

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars won 6-3 over the Arcola/Kisbey Combines at home in a game that the Combines were close in until the third period. Cougars captain Ben Johnstone scored two in the game, and Ty Currie, Mark Shaw, Nathen Deck and Korby Boutin each scored singles. Noah Ray, Walker Hengen and Tyson Hislop scored for Arcola/Kisbey.

Sunday’s lone game saw the Wawota Flyers edge Midale 6-5 on Derek Frater’s second goal of the game, scored with 4.7 seconds left in regulation, to break a 5-5 tie in Wawota. Matt Geske, Braden Ganson, Garrett Sherlock, Ziegler and Taylor Van de Sype scored for the Mustangs. Wawota tied it up on a goal by Riley Riddell with 2:42 left in regulation before the Frater goal ended up winning the game for the Flyers.

Wawota had won in Carnduff over the Red Devils 5-4 Friday. Trevor Geiger, Jason Doyes, Matt Moriarty and Tanner Reynolds each scored for the Red Devils. Taylor Ernst scored a pair for the visiting Flyers.

Carlyle’s Johnstone leads the league with 13 goals and two assists for 15 points, and he’s tied in the scoring race with Oxbow’s Holt, who has five goals and 10 assists and also 15 points. Cody Dumaine of Carnduff has a 2.50 goals against average and is tied for the league lead with Tanner Erickson of Yellow Grass.

The weekend will be fairly busy in the league. Friday, Midale travels to Carnduff, Oxbow is at Carlyle, and Arcola Kisbey is at Redvers. Saturday, Arcola/Kisbey is at Kipling/Windthorst and Carlyle is at Wawota, and Sunday, Bienfait is at Wawota.
