Bruins pre-deadline update

Heading into an SJHL trade deadline that has been surprisingly quiet so far, there also isn't much stirring on the Bruins' trade front at the moment.

It sounds like the team will be adding a defenceman one way or another. Former Bruin Tyler Spencer, who left the team last January, has been practicing with the team for the last week or so. The local product has asked to rejoin the team and, depending on what happens in the next 36 hours or so, that could happen.

The Bruins are still looking to acquire a rearguard via trade, but if that doesn't happen, Spencer will likely be a Bruin again.

"Whether he does or doesn't join the team will probably be an 11th-hour decision," said Keith Cassidy. "He's certainly, in the times he's been out with us, worked hard and showed a desire to come back and that's encouraging."

Spencer, who turns 20 next week, played two seasons with the Bruins, with 23 points each year.

Meanwhile, Keith said he's not planning to keep three goalies past the deadline.

He said Tyler Ross didn't get much help in his first start Friday in Melfort. He said he showed some rust, but got better as the game went on and also looked very good yesterday in Humboldt.

"He moves real well, he's a big body in the net and he battles hard for pucks," he said.

Nothing is imminent right now, but that could change quickly, so check back for updates. When something happens, it'll be here.

Earlier today, the first deadline trade took place when Melfort sent 20-year-old defenceman Mitch Berg to Battlefords for 19-year-old D Zach MacLellan and 18-year-old forward Jake Daughtry.

This is a deal I like for both teams. Berg will add to a formidable Stars blueline while MacLellan is a steady two-way defenceman who will help Melfort next year. I don't know much about Daughtry.

Other than that, though, it's been pretty quiet. This deadline has been night and day compared to last year, when a ton of significant moves had already been made by now, many of them within the league. We'll see if things heat up.
