Estevan Minor Baseball salutes Kevin Culy for his commitment to the sport

One of Estevan Minor Baseball's dedicated volunteers was recognized Friday.

ESTEVAN - Estevan Minor Baseball saluted one of its long-time volunteers during the opening ceremonies for the Baseball Sask. under-11 (U11) AA Tier 4 and the U15 AA Tier 4 provincial tournaments, which are happening in at Mel Murray Cactus Park in Estevan this weekend.

Kevin Culy tossed the ceremonial first pitch during the opening ceremonies Friday at Mel Murray Cactus Park. A banner honouring Culy was unveilled on the minor baseball Wall of Fame.

Culy came to Estevan in September 2004 after being involved with Baseball Sask. since 1980, first as a player and then as an umpire, from 1997 onward.

Upon arrival in Estevan, the late Bob Burns was a recognizable name in the area as well as the province, and he passed on his wisdom to Culy, who continued to work on his craft. He attended an umpire camp in 2006 where baseball officials teach others how to become an instructor.

Since 2007, Culy has earned seven national assignments and was supposed to attend an eighth as an umpire this August in Fort McMurray.

He is spending more time with mentoring, teaching the next generation of umpires.

Minor baseball president Joe Williamson applauded Culy for his commitment, and said he considers Culy a friend.

Also at the ceremonies minor baseball recognized Nadra Williamson for all the time she has put in to make these provincials happen, as well as a U13 provincial tournament last month.
