Local hockey wrap: Big Six semifinals set

The semifinals have been determined in the Big Six Hockey League playoffs.

The No. 1 Redvers Rockets will face the No. 4 Moosomin Rangers in one series, while the No. 2 Carnduff Red Devils will play the No. 3 Yellow Grass Wheat Kings in the other clash. Dates for those series have not been revealed.

Carnduff reached the semifinals with a 3-2 victory over Bienfait Coalers on Tuesday night in Carnduff to win the best-of-three series 2-1. Bienfait led Game 3 2-1 after the first period, and the score remained through two, but Carnduff scored twice in the third to rally.

Also on Tuesday, the Rangers defeated the Carlyle Cougars 6-2 in Game 3 of their series. Moosomin led 1-0 after the first period, and then added three in the second for a 4-0 advantage. Carlyle got one back in the middle frame, and added another in the third to cut the lead in half.

Redvers reached the semifinals by sweeping the Midale Mustangs in their best-of-three series, and Yellow Grass advanced by doing the same to the Oxbow Huskies.

Dates for the semifinals were not immediately available.

In other hockey action, the Estevan Bruins scored four times in an eight-minute span of the second period to defeat the La Ronge Ice Wolves 7-3 on Tuesday night in La Ronge.

La Ronge was the only team the Bruins had not defeated this season. The Wolves were also 8-1-1 in their last 10 games before Tuesday night.

Erik Houk had the lone goal in the first period, and was among the Bruins to score in the four-goal barrage in the middle frame. Zach Burfoot, Brandon Ambrozik and Caelan Fitzpatrick also scored in the second.

Alex Von Sprecken and Kade Runke tallied for the Bruins in the third. The goal for Von Sprecken came 18 seconds into the third.

Gavin Mattey, Liam McInnis and Matt Smith had the La Ronge goals.

Boston Bilous stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced for the Bruins. Xavier Cannon made 31 saves on 38 shots for La Ronge, and was replaced by Dawson Smith, who stopped all nine shots he faced.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday night in La Ronge.

The Estevan Steelhaus U18 AAA Bears season came to an end Tuesday night in an 8-2 loss to the host Regina Pat Canadians.

Cade Cole opened the scoring for Estevan 6:27 into the first period, and it was a 1-0 after one. But Regina took over in the middle frame by outscoring Estevan 5-1. Kole Keen had the lone goal for Estevan in the second.

Harper Lolacher had three goals, and former Bear Zayden Sadlemyer added a goal and three assists for Regina

Kaden Perron stopped 30 of the 38 shots he faced for the Bears.

This marked the first full season in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League for the Bears, who finished with a 14-23-7 record. They will finish 10th in the standings.

The South East Aaron Well Servicing U18 AA Goldwings wrapped up their regular season Tuesday with a 3-1 win over the Notre Dame Hounds in Midale.

After Notre Dame opened the scoring in the second, Katelyn Thackeray scored to tie the game, and then McKenna Walls and Madi Doud added goals in the third.

Phoenix Preston-Winder was in goal for the Wings.

The Goldwings will finish second in the South Division of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League with a 14-6-4 record. They went 14-3-3 in their last 20 games.
