It was a blustery, cold September morning. With rain falling, the golf course was one of the last places you would expect a crowd; but, dedicated high school golfers from across the southeast braved the elements on Thursday, Sept. 19, to participate in the Southeast Cornerstone District Grass Golf Tournament.
Though the day was less than perfect in regards to weather, the youth still thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the Kenosee course. A challenging 18-holes, set in the beautiful Moose Mountains had the youth excited to get out on the fairways.
"A big thank you to Golf Kenosee," Trent Johnson, commissioner of the tournament, explained. "We've hosted it here for, I think, the last four years now and they have been great."
The day would see many youth breaking 100 in a bid to make it to provincials, but only three girls and three guys would come away with that honour.
The top three male golfers for the day were Walker Hengen of Arcola who shot a 78, Preston Hutt of Lampman with a score of 80, and finally Brayden Stewart of Maryfield who shot an 86.
The top female golfer of the day was Kelly Kay of Maryfield with a score of 108. Hot on her heels were both Tiji Donovan of Estevan and Bailey Heury of Manor, both with scores of 111.
Overall the Lampman boys' team coached by Holly Barabosh earned the honour of the top male team with Preston Hutt's 80, Mark Freitag's 102, Damon Hutt's 95, and Chantz Vinck's score of 90.
While the top girls' team went to the Estevan team coached by Wes Kreklewich. This included Donovan's 111, Shana Hamilton's 112, and Kailey McLellan's score of 121.
In total 65 senior high school students from as far as Rocanville, Yellow Grass, and Estevan gathered at Golf Kenosee for a chance to make it to the provincial action in Good Soil at the Northern Meadows Golf Course, which is taking place Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28.
