Rebels, Weyburn players to begin series with Winnipeg Ice

The Regina Rebels, including three Weyburn players, will face the Winnipeg Ice for the chance to play in the Esso Cup national championship later in April.

WEYBURN – The Regina Rebels repeated as provincial Female U18 champions, after defeating the Notre Dame Hounds, and now advancing to a playoff for the chance to go to the Esso Cup national championship.

The Rebels roster included Weyburn players Addison Greve, Ella Schenher and Rayna Hennie, and they had a bye for the first round of playoffs as they finished top of the league for the second year in a row.

The girls played the North Battleford Sharks in the second round, defeating them in two games by scores of 5-4 and 5-4.

This led the Rebels to the third round, coming up against the Notre Dame Hounds and they won it in two straight games by scores of 7-3 and 4-1.

The Regina team are league champs for two years in a row, and will now take on the West regional hosts, Winnipeg Ice, this weekend with game 1 being on Friday, April 5.

This is a best-of-three series, with the winner to advance to the nationals, the Esso Cup at Vernon, B.C., to be held on April 20-28.

Following that, Addison has one more chance to play, as she will be playing in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, set for May 5-12 in Grande Prairie, Alta.
