Red Wings add two more wins to their Sherwood lead

The Weyburn Red Wings added another two wins to their regular season, as they continued to dominate in the Sherwood division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Weyburn Red Wings added another two wins to their regular season, as they continued to dominate in the Sherwood division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Red Wings have 53 points so far this season, placing them second only to the Battleford North Stars in the Bauer league who have 58 points.

Weyburn hosted two home games, against Melfort on Dec. 16 and Melville on Dec. 18, before taking their Christmas break. They took a 5-4 shootout win against the Mustangs.

Scoring started tied 2-2 by the end of the first period. Melfort scored the first two goals, then Jordon Hoffman scored at 8:07, assisted by Sam Williams and Kevin Morrison; and Miguel Pereira scored at 13:52, assisted by Williams and Hoffman.

Each team scored once during the second and the third. Ryan Whitell scored at 15:40 in the second period, assisted by Jack Kennelly and Kevin Morrison. Coltyn Sanderson scored during a power play ay 6:16 in the third period, assisted by Kennelly.

With the game still tied, the teams went into an overtime period, and then into a shootout as no goals were scored in the fourth. All three of Melfort's shooters were unable to score, while a lone goal by Sanderson during the shootout secured the victory for Weyburn.

In net for the Red Wings was Brett Teskey, who stopped 21 out of 25 attempts. The Red Wing offence attempted 51 times to score past the Mustangs goaltender, with 20 shots taken in the first, 17 in the second, nine in the third and four in the fourth.

From the Red Wings, game stars were earned by Coltyn Sanderson and Sam Williams.

When playing against the Millionaires, the Red Wings won 4-2. Despite seven attempts for the Millionaires, and eight for the Red Wings, there were no goals scored in the first.

Both team notched two goals during the second period. For the Red Wings, Robert Wilkinson scored at 7:00, assisted by Kennelly and Whitell; and Williams scored at 13:51, assisted by Sanderson and Eric Macoretta.

The Red Wings notched an early goal in the third period, taken by Whitell at 7:38, assisted by Kennelly and Wilkinson. Then, with only one minute and a half left in the game, Melville pulled their goaltender to gain an extra offence. However, the Red Wings took advantage of the empty net, with Pereira scoring at 19:00, assisted by Sanderson and Carter Struthers.

Mitch Kilgore was in net for the win, stopping 26 out of 28 attempts. For the Red Wing offence, they had 30 attempts, taking eight in the first, 11 in the second and 11 in the third.

In other Red Wing news, they have announced two out of three guest speakers for their 10th annual Sports Dinner and Auction. The event will be hosted at McKenna Hall on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The two announced speakers include Brad Park, a former defenseman for the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings, and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame; and Catriona Le May Doan, a Saskatchewan-born two-time Olympic gold medalist in 500 metre speed skating. The third speaker will be announced at a later date.

Tickets to the Sports Dinner are $65 per person, and available at the Red Wing office.

Next action for the Weyburn Red Wings will be the Tom Huston classic home-and-home series against the Estevan Bruins. The Wings host the first game on Friday, Dec. 30 at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m.; and then travel to Estevan on Saturday, Jan. 1.
