Redvers edges Yellow Grass in showdown of top Big Six teams

Five games were played in the Big Six Hockey League on the weekend.

Sunday night’s game between the top two teams in the Big Six Hockey League lived up to the hype.

The host Redvers Rockets beat the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings 5-4 in a shootout. Redvers had leads of 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 midway through the third, before the Wheat Kings staged a furious comeback. 

Remy Lamotte, Daylin Smallchild, Preston Kopeck and Colby Potapinski had the goals for Redvers.  

Tucker Neuberger scored twice for Yellow Grass. Bradon Mellon and Rhett Frey had the other Yellow Grass goals.  

Thomas Bauche was in goal for Redvers, who improved their record to a league-best 8-0-1, while Terrick Wilderman (6-1-1) was the Wheat Kings’ goaltender.  

Several other games were played in the Big Six on the weekend.

The Bienfait Coalers routed the Wawota Flyers 8-2 on Friday night in Wawota, a game that Wawota led 1-0 midway through the first. 

Landon Runge scored twice in the first period for Bienfait. Russell Purdy also had two goals. Blaine Herzberg, Wyatt Garagan and Kaelan Holt also scored for Bienfait. (The name of the eighth goal scorer was not available). 

Zack Miller was in goal for Bienfait.  

River Lafferty had both goals for Wawota. 

Three games were played on Saturday. The Carnduff Red Devils routed the Midale Mustangs 9-2. Brandon Trask, Ben Hiltz and Mark Moriarty each scored twice for Carnduff. Nico Anderson and Kody Martin also scored.

Daniel Fellner and Dustin Graham had the Midale goals.  

Drew Fenwick was in goal for Midale. (Carnduff goalie was not availabl).  

The Rockets knocked off the Coalers 6-2. Drew Hoff and Preston Kopeck each had two goals for Redvers. Kopeck also had two assists. Brady Fiederchuk and Kevin Mann also scored.

Bauche was the winning goalie.  

Wyatt Garagan and Dylan Herzberg were the Bienfait goal scorers. Ethan Veroba was in goal.  

Yellow Grass suffered their first loss of the season, a 6-1 decision against the Moosomin Rangers.  

Bud Holloway had three goals for Moosomin and Jacob Pillar scored twice for the Rangers, who led 3-0 after the first period and 6-0 through two. Monty Driver had the other goal.

Mike Onstad was the goal scorer for Yellow Grass. 

Kyler Beckett was in goal for the Rangers. Wilderman was the goalie for Yellow Grass.  

Three games are scheduled for Jan. 14: Carnduff at Oxbow, Moosomin at Redvers, and Yellow Grass at the Carlyle cougars.

Wawota is then slated to visit Moosomin on Jan. 15 in Wapella. All games are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. 

Three games are slated for Jan. 16: Carlyle at Yellow Grass, Wawota at Carnduff and Oxbow at Redvers. Those games will start at 7 p.m.
