Weyburn coaches, swimmer receives Artistic Swim awards

Weyburn coaches and sisters Meagan Rothwell and Kim Neithercut were the recipients of the Weiner Sisters Provincial Stream Coach of The Year award at the Athlete/Coach/Volunteer Recognition Awards Dinner held on Nov 23 by the Saskatchewan Artistic Swim Association.

Both sisters competed in Weyburn until leaving for University. Both have returned to Weyburn and teach locally. The sisters co-coach the senior high performance team. The girls were honoured to receive the award from Margo Weiner, one of the sisters the award is named after.

WASC was also very proud to have Haley Copeland receive the Provincial Stream Competitive Most Improved Athlete. Haley swims with the WASC senior high performance team in Weyburn and also qualified to train with the Provincial Development team.

These awards are for accomplishments in the previous season.

Other club athletes nominated for awards were:

Megan Dammann was nominated for Provincial Stream Competitive Athlete of the Year.  Megan also swims on the senior HP team and qualified for the Provincial High Performance program. Megan shows commitment to her own personal excellence and the mentorship of young athletes.

Maya Kelln was nominated for Recreational Athlete of the Year for her commitment to reaching all the necessary skills to move into the provincial competitive program.

Local athletes also were rewarded for their commitment in training for the strength, flexibility and speed required to excel in Artistic swimming.

LTAD (long term athlete development) awards were given to the top two athletes in the province in each competitive age year for initial time trials in speed. Weyburn proudly had athletes winning in each competitive age group:

2011- Shaelyn Periard, second place; 2008- Lily Popescu, first place; 2006- Payton Caldwell, first place; 2005- Marley Kradovill, second place; 2004- Haley Copeland, second place; 2003- Megan Dammann, first place; 2002- Caitlyn Graham, second place.

WASC is very proud of every athlete and their commitment to striving for excellence in Artistic Swimming in Weyburn and Saskatchewan.
