Weyburn Iron Pigs set for post-season play

WEYBURN -- The Weyburn Iron Pigs will begin playoffs for the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League, facing the Regina Capitals in the first round.

The Iron Pigs ended with a 6-5-1 record on the season, and started on Wednesday night at home, at Tom Laing Park.

Future dates will see the Iron Pigs play in Regina on Monday, Aug. 23, then back home on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m.

In their final game, played on Aug. 10 in Moose Jaw, the Iron Pigs had a 6-3 loss to the Moose Jaw Padres. Weyburn tied the game up at 1-1 in the second inning, and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth and 3-1 in the fifth.

Moose Jaw’s bats came to life, however, and they scored four runs in the fifth inning, and they added one more in the sixth for the win.

Runs were scored by Adam Ziegler, Evan Schultz and Cam Evans, with Kelton Hoium and Evans each getting an RBI.

James Giroux was on the mound for four innings, and Ethan Orsted for two. Giroux allowed seven hits and five runs, including a home run, and got five strike-outs, while Orsted allowed two hits and one run, and recorded two strike-outs.
