Wings 5 - Millionaires 6

The Weyburn Red Wings tried to redeem themselves in front of their hometown crowd on Tuesday night at Crescent Point Place against the visiting Melville Millionaires.

The Millionaires struck just fifty two seconds into the opening period when Ian McNulty made it 1-0, finding the back of Brett Tesky's net.

Weyburn's Carter Struthers knotted the game at one-all, at the 2:08 mark of the first period. The Wings would take a 2-1 lead at the 4:40 mark of the first period when Thomas Carleton would bring the local crowd to their feet. The score would remain 2-1 for the remainder of the period.

The second period ended up a shooting gallery for both teams as Melville would score four more goals and Weyburn would answer back with two of their own. It appeared that Melville was about to run over the Wings with three unanswered goals, when Matt Martin would get a short-handed goal and Struthers would get his second of the night with 10.9 seconds left in the period to make it a 5-4 contest in Melville's favour.

Weyburn's Brendan Wilde evened the game at five-all at the 3:44 mark of the final period which appeared to be the only goal of the final period, but a questionable call by the officials sent Melville on the hunt for a power play goal. Unfortunately it would be the Mils who would score with less than three minutes left on the clock securing a 6-5 contest. Hard as Weyburn would try in the dying seconds of the game, they could not draw even once again.

This was a much better showing by the Wings and with time they will be a team to be reckoned with.

Wings 1- Bruins 5

While stumbling out of the gate in front of 1137 fans on October 5, the Wings had hoped for a better performance at Spectra Place in Estevan on October 6.

This would not be the case however, as the Bruins, in front of 1520 of their own fans, solidly defeated the Wings 5-1. Weyburn netminder Nick Clark got the nod to backstop the Wings Saturday night, stopping 32 shots in the loss.

The Bruins went on the offensive early in the game thanks to a Wings penalty and came away with a 1-0 lead at the 2:38 minute mark when Tanner Froese took advantage of the Wing's penalty.

Weyburn's Lane Harbor would even the score when he found the back of the Bruins' net with help from Jayden Roosen at the 9:18 mark of the opening period. Estevan's Wyatt Garagan would score the Bruins second (and game winning goal) at the 13:46 minute mark of the first period to give the black and gold a slim 2-1 lead going into the second period.

Estevan lit the lamp with three unanswered goals in the second period to elevate them over their local nemesis. Hudson Morrison scored on the power play at the three minute mark and then added his second of the period at the 13:18 mark. Nick Weiss would add the final Bruins goal at the 14:33 mark.

Weyburn nor Estevan would score again for the remainder of the contest with the Wings serving 46 minutes in penalties, while Estevan spent 32 minutes in the "sin-bin."

Wings 2- Terriers 7

"It was a very polite game between these two rival teams and that has me puzzled" said Wing's General Manger Ron Rumball. "We need to play with more desire and get in front of their goaltender and create some scoring opportunities" Rumball continued after the 7-2 loss in front of the home town crowd.

The Wings appeared lethargic for their home opening game against the Terriers as it was Yorkton who provided all the scoring for the first two periods of the contest. Weyburn's Brett Teskey faced 11 shots over two periods and allowed six goals before being relieved in the third period by Nate Ferris, who stopped eight shots and allowed one goal.

The only bright spots in the game came in the third period when Weyburn's Tyler Borstmayer, assisted by Carter Struthers and Thomas Carelton, found the back of Yorkton's net three minutes into the final period. Weyburn would strike again when Ryan Whitell, aided by Kyle Oleniuk and Miguel Pereira, made it a 6-2 contest to this point in the game. Yorkton would add their seventh and final goal later in the period, on the power play, to give them the victory over the Wings.

Rumball would conclude that, "no team has won the SJHL title in September or October and that people should remember that this Weyburn team will grow together and become a stronger force to be reckoned with as the season unfolds."
