Photos: 2008 Western Canadian champs recognized at opening ceremonies

A large crowd turned out for the event that opened this year's Western Canada Baseball Championships in Estevan.

ESTEVAN - A championship minor baseball team from Estevan was recognized Thursday night at Lynn Prime Park during the opening ceremonies for the 2022 Western Canada Baseball Championships in Estevan.

The Estevan KPC U18 AAA Blazers - the only Estevan team to win a Western Canadian championship - threw out the ceremonial opening pitch. Twelve of 14 players and four coaches were at Thursday's opening ceremony. They threw out the ceremonial opening pitches to current local minor baseball players.

The Blazers won Westerns as the host team 14 years ago in the last time Westerns were held in Estevan.

Derek Wallace, who was the MVP of Saskatchewan U18 AAA baseball that season, and coach Mel Murray paid tribute to the team as well.

The ceremonies began with the teams being marched out onto the field. Grace Hall sang O Canada. Mel Murray and Nadra Williamson - who are the co-chairs of this year's tournament - were recognized. Each of the teams were introduced, and the umpires were recognized, too.
