WEYBURN – Weyburn Soccer's Frostival tournament proved to be a resounding success, attracting 28 teams and families from Moose Jaw, Yorkton, and Regina on Saturday and Sunday to the Credit Union Spark Centre.

With around 500 spectators in attendance, the event showcased not only the talent on the field but also garnered admiration for Weyburn's impressive facility.

There were about 400 players on the field with 90 coaches and managers for the teams which played on the two soccer pitches on Mainil Field.

Weyburn Soccer’s technical director, Tyler Hillstead, noted that among the attendees, one referee expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Weyburn, citing the unique soccer culture the city is fostering.

“He highlighted the respectful and competitive atmosphere, contrasting it with larger urban centers,” said Hillstead, who also coached a couple of the teams taking part over the weekend, including a U11 boys team and a U13 girls team.

"All our teams experienced tremendous success on the field. This achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of Weyburn Soccer's development and competition programs, which equip our players with the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to excel,” said Hillstead.

“Our inclusive approach, devoid of evaluations and tryouts, ensures that anyone who desires to compete is afforded the opportunity to do so. The dedication of coaches and players throughout the indoor season was brilliantly showcased this past weekend on our home turf,” he added, noting the tournament underscored the success of the approach of Weyburn Soccer in building up the sport in Weyburn.

“At Weyburn Soccer, our philosophy revolves around fostering a love for the game in the most conducive environment while providing ample opportunities for our members. We deeply appreciate the chance to host out-of-town teams for competition, a testament to our ongoing efforts. The presence of clubs at events like the ‘Frostival’ soccer weekend underscores the attractiveness of our Spark Centre facility, but it's our teams' competitive prowess that truly draws clubs to Weyburn."

He added, that in general, “Throughout the weekend, teams were seen smiling, competing fiercely, and displaying sportsmanship, reinforcing the positive community spirit that defines Weyburn's soccer scene.”
