Back in 1967 the bustling town of Ormiston really got involved in celebrating Canada’s Centennial. At the time, four 11-year old friends decided to walk from Ormiston to Moose Jaw to commemorate the 100th anniversary.

Creative juices flowed at the Assiniboia Artist Retreat from July 17 to 22 at the Curling Rink in Assiniboia.

The Shurniak Art Gallery hosted an artists’ reception and opening of an unique exhibit by the father-daughter artists Dean G. Bauche and Dani Bauche-Williams on July 20. The exhibit runs from July 15 to August 26.

Crops are developing quickly but normally in much of the province, Saskatchewan Agriculture reported for the week of July 11 to 17.

A large mural is beautifying the centre of Assiniboia between Second and Third Avenues. The mural is commissioned by Communities in Bloom and the art is by Vivian Kell. Kell says that she still has some work to complete on the mural.

Canadian Wrestling Elite is bringing pro wrestling to Assiniboia on Sunday, August 13. The Winnipeg-based CWE is on a tour of 20 different towns in Canada from July 31 to August 20 with The Nightmare on Elite Street Tour.

The Berry Jam festival shone with a fantastic musical line up on July 8 in Kincaid. Bouvier’s Berry Basket, a U-pick berry farm north of Kincaid, played host to the third annual music event.

July has been a busy month for tourism in Assiniboia. Canada 150 celebrations filled the streets, and day camps and swimming are keeping dozens of young families active.

Ogema Agricultural Society held its 103rd annual summer fair on July 8 with something for everyone. Fair day was action-packed starting with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Deep South Museum at 7 a.m., followed by a parade down main street.

The Moose Jaw Little League girls softball district All Star Sask Team are heading to the Canadian Championships on July 24-27 taking place in Calgary. The team starts the tournament on July 24 with its first game against Medicine Hat.
