The South East Cornerstone Public School has released a phased-in plan to return to extracurricular activities in the division’s schools.
The plan was posted on the school division’s Facebook page on Friday. According to the division, it is currently in Phase 1. Movement to other phases will be determined at the system level.
All activities will require staff supervision, and the school division noted that it recognizes and supports that these are voluntary activities.
For sport activities, Phase 1, which includes physical education and recess, calls for a professional learning community to develop processes and guidelines to safely resume activities in classes and at recess, increase access to shared equipment and develop processes, and review governing the governing sport body and study documents from the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association.
Phase 2 is split into two parts for local school intramural programs. Following guidelines, students will have opportunities to participate within their own cohorts. The Estevan Comprehensive School and Weyburn Comprehensive School cohorts will be defined by grade level from Grades 9-12. In the later stage of Phase 2, cohorts may begin to play against other cohorts within the same school.
Phase three, which is for interschool and South East District Athletics Association play, is also split in two. First, teams may be formed at the school level and practices may be initiated. Students from the Cyber Stone Virtual School and those who are homeschooled are welcome to join with their base or originating school to participate.
Community coaches may be engaged with teams.
Later on in Phase 3, interschool mini-leagues may be established but must follow guidelines. Students may only participate in one sport or event at any given time.
The final phase for sports states that teams may be approved to compete against teams from other jurisdictions.
As for arts extracurricular activities, including drama, choral and band, a similar professional learning committee has to be formed. Re-open Saskatchewan guidelines for the performing arts must be followed.
Phase 2, which is split in two, is for local school engagement. Following guidelines, participants engaged in the activity must be from the same cohort. Estevan Comp. and Weyburn Comp. cohorts will be defined by grade level from Grades 9-12. Later in Phase 2, participants may be from a mix of cohorts within the same school.
Phase 3, also split in two parts, allows for interschool activities within the school division. Groups can be formed comprised of students from mixed cohorts, with Cyber Stone and homeschool students welcome to join activities with their base or originating school. Community directors may be engaged.
Later in Phase 3, interschool activities may be established and must follow developed guidelines.
Finally, Phase 4 allows for interdivisional participation with groups approved to perform in other jurisdictions beyond Cornerstone.
Clubs may be established and must follow the general guidelines of the phased approach.
