The South East Cornerstone Public and Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Divisions have released their enrolment numbers for Sept. 30.

Cornerstone’s Sept. 30 numbers were at 8,288 students, compared with 8,371 students on Sept. 30, 2019.

The school division expected to have 8,375 students for this school year. Projections were established before the COVID-19 pandemic was first diagnosed in Saskatchewan in March.

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) remains the largest in the city, with 724 students for the Grade 9-12 school. The projected enrolment was 741 students.

As for Estevan’s kindergarten to Grade 8 schools, Spruce Ridge School came in at 360 students, down from the 389 that they projected. Pleasantdale was at 195 students, compared to a projected total of 201. Westview had had 181, compared to the 186 projected. And Hillcrest was at 123, almost identical to the 124 projected.

As for other schools in the area, Macoun had 47 students, down from 58 projected for a school that is Kindergarten to Grade 8. Bienfait Weldon, also a kindergarten to Grade 8 school, had 115, while its projected enrolment was 139. And Lampman School, a kindergarten to Grade 12 school, had 178 students versus a projection of 193.

Some of the students who are not registered in the schools may be registered in the division’s Cyber Stone Virtual School, which currently has 393 students. Cyberstone has base students, which are students who take all their classes online, and there are other students who register for one or two courses.

Cornerstone had projected 49 base students for Cyber Stone, but wound up with the 393.

Homeschooling numbers have increased to from 172 to 281. While the homeschooling numbers are included in the division’s enrolement figures, they would not count towards an individual school’s total.

Director of education Lynn Little noted that these are full student count numbers and are subject to change as South East Cornerstone, like others in the province, are still finalizing registrations of students who have moved to online learning, homeschooling or other communities in Saskatchewan.

The Sept. 30 numbers are traditionally described as the official numbers for a school division.

The Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division operates two schools in Estevan, St. Mary’s School and Sacred Heart School/Ecole Sacre Coeur.

Sacred Heart, which has French Immersion classes in addition to English classes, had 340 students, down from 378 a year earlier. St. Mary’s School had 281 students, compared with 294 in 2019.

Both schools are kindergarten to Grade 8.

As for the division, Holy Family had 1,342 students as of Sept. 30, down 50 from their pervious year enrolments. The division has students in schools in Estevan, Weyburn, Radville and Wilcox.
