Two rinks with local connections that qualified for the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championships in Melville had mixed results Friday.

A member of the Estevan Bruins has been recognized for his involvement in the community.

The new Estevan Bears midget AAA hockey team has turned to a well-travelled local individual to be their first head coach and general manager. The Estevan Minor Hockey Association announced Tuesday morning that they had hired Jeff Smith for the role.

The Redvers Rockets have moved into a tie for first place with the Carnduff Red Devils in the Big Six Hockey League’s standings. The Rockets blanked the host Yellow Grass Wheat Kings 4-0 on Jan.

Some highly skilled young curlers were on the ice at the Power Dodge Curling Centre on Jan. 17 and 18 for the annual U15 and U18 bonspiels. In the under-18 division, there was a tie for first place between Team Wilson and Team Willock.

Weyburn AtoMc Green played in an 8 team tournament in Lumsden. They went 5-0 in the tournament.

The Assiniboia Curling Club is now roughly halfway through its current season, but the action will continue to buzz. The Masters Spiel took place in early January with eight rinks enjoying a weekend of games and fellowship.

The Carlyle Novice Cougars (Chris) were back in action on the weekend of Jan. 18 and 19 when they played at home against Carlyle (Scott) and White Bear. They won both games with scores of 11-6 and 32-1 taking their record to 5-0. Game 1: Sat, Jan.

The Cougars had an unexpected weekend off as the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings had to cancel their trip to Carlyle. Follow the Observer and Cougars Facebook and Twitter accounts for the date on this rescheduled game.

The Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins are back on the winning track after suffering just their second regulation time loss of the season. The midget AAs trounced the Moose Jaw Warriors 8-2 on Jan.
