This year’s Western Hockey League (WHL) champions have a strong local flavour.

The Weyburn Cobras 15U women’s volleyball team attended Nationals in Edmonton from May 9-12. The Cobras were seeded number three in Saskatchewan going into Nationals, so were placed in Division 1, which included the top 32 teams in the country.

A member of the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs badminton team won a bronze medal at provincials in Swift Current on Saturday. Ruth Pecson went 3-2 overall to win the medal in girls' singles.

Rodeo clowns waved off the bull after rider Weston Davidson jumped off his back during the senior bull-riding event on Saturday afternoon at the Weyburn High School Rodeo.

This year’s Coal Country Run drew a large crowd to Woodlawn Regional Park on Saturday. The run started at the park’s Rotary Hall. Participants could walk or run a distance of five or 10 kilometres, and there was also a mini mile for children.

The junior team-roping pair of Trey Nowosad and Logan Beebe did their best to rope this calf, with Nowosad getting the head. The pair had to take no time as the heels were not roped in this try.

Mazey Hillrud of Ceylon rounded the final barrel of her cloverleaf patern during the junior barrel-racing event at the Weyburn High School Rodeo on Saturday. She recorded a time 16.617 seconds, plus a five-second penalty for knocking a barrel over.

Several athletes from the Estevan Sharks water polo program were part of Team Saskatchewan at the recent under-19 Water Polo Canada National Champions League Western Finals in Calgary.

The Estevan Steel Reef under-11 AAA Brewers baseball team opened their season by winning the B event of their home tournament at Cactus Park.
