Submitted Carlyle’s Nathen Schmidt won the Canada-West Championships at 61kg at the University of Fraser Valley. This is Nathen’s second Canada-West title in his first two years of university, one at 68kg and one at 61kg.

The Brent Gedak rink had a tough weekend at the SaskTel Tankard men’s provincial curling championships in Whitewood. The Gedak rink, curling out of the Power Dodge Curling Centre, went 0-3 at the Tankard, and was among the first teams eliminated.

The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins had another strong effort Tuesday night in a 3-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) announced Monday that Estevan’s Cole Fonstad, a forward with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League, has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week, for the week of Feb. 4-10.

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs cheer team took the top spot at the Best of the West Cheer and Dance Competition at the University of Regina on the weekend.

The South East midget AA Goldwings have wrapped up top spot overall in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League. The Goldwings (18-2) concluded the season by sweeping the Notre Dame Hounds in a home and home.

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs 1 team took top spot at the mixed high school district playdowns, which were held at the Power Dodge Curling Centre on Friday and Saturday.

The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins wrapped up a playoff spot on Saturday night with a 6-2 road victory over the Melville Millionaires. Estevan (27-21-2-1) has 57 points.

The Estevan Minor Hockey Association is hosting its annual Timbits initiation tournament this weekend. The tournament started Saturday morning and will continue through Sunday. Games are being played at Affinity Place and the Power Dodge Ice Centre.

The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins had a defensively dominant effort on Friday night in a 2-0 victory over the Melville Millionaires at Affinity Place.
