Unless you’re taking part in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, hockey isn’t the dominant sport for most Canadians during the middle of June. Australians, on the other hand, are in the middle of their winter season.

In the Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League, the Stoney Creek Braves visited Wadena May 30th and defeated the Wadena Wildcats but fell to the Rosebud Royals.

On Monday, June 12, Sacred Heart High School held its spring sports banquet. This event takes place every year to recognize deserving athletes from curling, basketball, badminton and track and field. All award winners are listed below.

The Parkland Expos baseball team of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League tacked another three losses on to their record in the past week. They played one game in Melville and two in Yorkton.

A total of 13 athletes from Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton represented the school at the provincial track and field meet in Saskatoon from June 2-4.

On Sunday, June 4, the Yellowhead International Speedway was flooded with cars, drivers and spectators as the 2017 stock car racing season began. The first race of the season saw some returning racers as well as some new faces to the Yorkton track.

The Yorkton Cardinals hosted the second annual student day on Thursday, June 8. More than 700 students filled the bleachers around Jubilee Park to watch as the Cardinals played against the highway 10 rivals, the Melville Millionaires in an 11 a.m.

Athletes from Canora Composite School (CCS) and Invermay School fared well at the district track-and-field competition in Yorkton on May 24-25. In bantam girls, Faith Mickelson of CCS finished fifth in the 100-metre dash with a time of 14.

Five track-and-field athletes at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute qualified at the district meet in Yorkton May 24 and 25 to advance to the provincial meet held in Saskatoon on Friday.

Last Friday evening, the cheers and chants sounding from Lions Ball Park in Yorkton could be heard from a mile away.
