When it comes to hosting major curling events, this region is second to none. Last winter, Tisdale hosted the seniors’ curling championships, while Melfort hosted the women’s provincials.

TISDALE — After six and a half years as principal of Tisdale Middle & Secondary School, Randy Kerr is taking on a new role. He starts as the co-ordinator of integrated services for the North East School Division on Jan. 30.

ROSE VALLEY — A credit union in Rose Valley was robbed. Two unknown Caucasian men broke into the Cornerstone Credit Union Jan. 22. The subjects smashed the walls and stole the ATM inside. The men fled in a black Ford truck with license plate 542 KAH.

With the throw of a ceremonial rock by a junior ladies team from Quill Lake, the 2019 Viterra Scotties Women’s Provincials officially began. The ceremonial rock was thrown by Kaley Ingram, while Kierra Anderson and Brynn Harcourt swept.

The seed has been planted for Humboldt’s Elgar Petersen Arena to compete in a nationwide contest that has $250,000 of renovations and a NHL game as its grand prize. Kraft’s Hockeyville contest is in the nomination stage until Feb. 10.

BJORKDALE — James Majewski, Bjorkdale’s mayor, felt this past year has been great for his community.

After two years of making it to the provincial finals and losing, Team Silvernagle is aiming to win it all in Humboldt.

A team with a mix of women’s, junior and mixed curling experience that’s ranked second overall in Saskatchewan is competing for the top spot at the provincials.

Last year’s Viterra Scotties Women’s Provincials champion is defending her title, skipping a team that’s new to her.
