WEYBURN – Young girls in Weyburn and the surrounding area are taking advantage of the Junior Gold Wings program, allowing them to play spring hockey for the month of April, and some will continue to play into May.

Coach Marshall Bakken spoke of his team, which played two games on Saturday versus the Regina Diamonds.

“It’s a spring hockey program, and our team is made up of girls born in 2015/2016. There is also 2014 and 2013 Jr. Gold Wings teams as well based out of Weyburn," he said.

He noted the teams are not in a league, but the teams play exhibition games and tournaments, and his girls are playing games against Sask Diamond (Regina) team and the Grroowl (Lumsden).

“Our team has three Weyburn girls, along with girls from Carlyle, Carnduff, Estevan, Lake Alma, Milestone and Sedley,” said Bakken.

On Saturday, they played the Diamonds twice and won 4-1 and 5-1. All the girls will be moving up to U11 this coming season.
