Weyburn Red Wings earn three of four points over weekend

The Red Wings took three of a possible four points, winning over La Ronge, but losing in OT to Yorkton.

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had two extremely close home games on the weekend and they came away with three of the possible four points.

They won 4-3 in an overtime shootout with the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday evening, and lost 3-2 in overtime to the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday.

In Friday’s game, both teams scored in the first period, with Weyburn’s Jackson Hassman getting the Wings on the board first, assisted by Ryley Morgan and Ty Mason.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Red Wings scored two in the second period, from Max Monette, assisted by Carter Briltz, and less than a minute later by Elijah Anderson, assisted by Blake Betson and Braigh LeGrandeur.

The Ice Wolves scored twice in the third, once on the power play, and there was no scoring in the overtime period, sending the game to a shootout.

La Ronge scored once, and Weyburn had two goals, by Anderson and Simon Pollock, to earn the win.

Eric Kahl was in net for the Red Wings for the full game and overtime, and he made 37 saves on 40 shots.

On Saturday evening, Mason scored in the first period, assisted by Pollock, then with 31 seconds in the period, Yorkton tied the game.

The Red Wings’ Ian Maier scored on the power play at 7:18 of the second period, assisted by Matthew Reidy and Matteo Turrin to give the Wings the lead, until the Terriers tied the game one minute into the third period.

In overtime, Yorkton scored the winning goal just under two minutes in to earn the win.

Matt Schoephoerster played in goal for the entire game, and made 25 saves on 28 shots on net.

The Red Wings will host the Flin Flon Bombers for a rare Thursday night game, and then the Nipawin Hawks are in town on Saturday, Feb. 11, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m. both nights at Crescent Point Place.
