Weyburn girls, Regina Rebels on way to Esso Cup national championship

The Regina Rebels U18AAA Female team, including two Weyburn players, defeated the Winnipeg Ice in two straight to take the best-of-three Western Regional championship.

WEYBURN – The Regina Rebels U18AAA Female team defeated the Winnipeg Ice in two straight to take the best-of-three Western Regional championship, and will now advance to Vernon, B.C. for the Esso Cup national championship.

The Rebels faced the Ice after winning the provincial championship for Saskatchewan, and won 4-3 in overtime on Friday, and 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Rebels include Weyburn players Addison Greve, who scored a goal in the overtime win, and Ella Schenher, and Rayna Hennie, formerly of Weyburn and now of Regina.

The Regina team will practice over the next couple of weeks before boarding a place for Vernon for the Esso Cup, to take place April 20-28.

Following this, Addison will have a second opportunity to play at a national championships, as she will compete at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, to be held May 5-12 in Grande Prairie, Alta.
