The opening salvo of the track and field season saw Glenn Hall Park overrun with swarms of athletes from all across the region. They ran and jumped and threw. Some came first, some came last. Most were somewhere in the middle.

The Battlefords North Stars announced the team's head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg has been selected as an assistant coach for Team West in the 2014 World Under 17 Tournament in Cape Breton, N.S., Dec. 28 to Jan. 5.

Over the weekend, Hockey Canada made a monumental decision when it comes to the development of young hockey players and their safety.

For the second time this season, the New Horizons were out playing golf, but this time it was on Thursday rather than the usual Monday. Even with a cool, windy day there were nine teams that took to the course with one group coming in at par.

The Edam Ladies fought off a late rally by the Battleford Bantam Bandits and went home with a 14-13 victory in Battlefords Ladies' Fastball League action Monday night. Edam dominated early, piling on the runs in the first few innings.

It was a fine Monday morning when the New Horizons, all 39 of them took to the course. It was easy determining who were the winners as the scores were 36, 37 and 38.

Pass, shoot, score, defend and hit. Those are the basic skills any young hockey player looks to develop, but hitting won't be on the list for much longer.

They came into Sunday night's 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship game having lost only 12 times in 89 games, and the Halifax Mooseheads refused to leave with any more. "We couldn't have asked for a better season.

The recipient of the 2013 Maroniuk/Marcoux Scholarship Award is Dray Souchotte, Lloydminster, AB. He will be presented with this Scholarship Award at the 29th Annual Induction of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, August 17.

The Battlefords North Stars have announced Brody Luhning has committed to join the University of Regina Cougars for the 2013-14 season. The Cougars are members of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the CIS.
