The first Battleford town council meeting of the year took place Jan. 9, and Battleford Mayor Chris Odishaw used the opportunity to look back on the past year and speak about the future of the town.

The theatre component of the CUPlex, the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, is slated to be substantially completed in April, though the building itself should be finished by the end of February.

Police are reporting the theft of fuel from a farm located in a rural area near Cando, Saskatchewan. Battlefords Rural RCMP and the police dog service attended the complaint on Jan. 13 around 11pm.

A fire that broke out Saturday on Sweetgrass First Nation is under investigation by the RCMP. According to police, the fire started shortly before 4:30 p.m., with the residence already engulfed in flames as police arrived.

The Battlefords Indian and Métis Friendship Centre got some help in their efforts to keep their homeless shelter open this winter. The Parish of Notre Dame Catholic Women's League presented a cheque for $500 to the Friendship Centre Friday.
