Oh, what a week. SaskTel Tankard organizers had little time after the Tankard trophy was presented to exhale before turning the rink back to its former home as a hockey and figure skating facility. But the week of Jan. 31- Feb.

Down by 19 late in the first half, the Estevan Comprehensive School senior boys Elecs basketball team dug deep and found themselves some momentum, and it was enough to propel them to a 100-98 McLeod Series win over the Weyburn Eagles.

The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games are being held in North Battleford from Feb. 18-24. The games are the largest multi-sport event in the province and draws athletes from every corner of Saskatchewan.

Steve Laycock has skipped SaskTel Tankard championships before but this one might taste a bit sweeter.

Steve Laycock’s rink defeated Brock Virtue 7-3 Sunday morning to qualify for the 2018 SaskTel Tankard final at Affinity Place this afternoon. The final goes at 2:30 p.m. with the winner qualifying for next months’ Tim Hortons Brier in Regina.

Both games ended early in the first round of the playoffs at the SaskTel Tankard at Affinity Place Friday night.

Friday’s playoff matches at the 2018 SaskTel Tankard were set after Saturday afternoon’s draws between C event finalists. Colton Flasch will play Brock Virtue in the 1-2 Page Playoff battle, with the winner getting a bye into Sunday’s 2:30 p.m.

Brent Gedak’s 2018 SaskTel Tankard is over, having lost Saturday morning 9-7 to Scott Bitz.

The McLeod Series is looked at by local sports people as the ultimate championship to win and one of the best atmospheres in any school sports events across the area.
