The Battlefords North Stars have a player back on the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's player of the week list, as Brody Luhning was named the defenceman of the week.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks had their new interim coaches Brittany Penner and Jordan Solomko on the bench this weekend, as they hosted the Regina Rebels.

The senior girls' 4A regional volleyball tournament for the north was held in Maidstone Nov. 12. Teams were Maidstone, Hague, La Loche, Makwa Sahgaiehcan, Martensville and Spiritwood. The day began with round robin play followed by the playoffs.

After winning in Swift Current, the Battlefords Midget Stars looked for their second win of the season, as they hosted the Beardy's Blackhawks Wednesday at the North Battleford Civic Centre.

The Battlefords North Stars haven't won in regulation since Nov. 5, but on the other hand they have lost in regulation just once their last 12 games.

Three local volleyball teams from the Humboldt area showed their skill over the weekend. Muenster School hosted the Junior B Boys Volleyball Districts on November 5. "It was a four-team tournament," said Chad Hofmann, coach of the Muenster Cougars.

Two Humboldt Broncos earned honours from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for their performance on the ice in October. Forward Andrew Johnston, a new member of the Broncos this year, was named the SJHL Player of the Month.

As the senior volleyball teams get set for regionals playoffs, the Regional Optimist has a preview of what those teams expect heading into the biggest weekend of the season and how their season has went thus far.

They were outshot by miles, but the Humboldt Broncos managed to hang on and win over the Melville Millionaires at home last week. The Broncos took on the Mils on November 1 in front of a hometown crowd of about 350 people.

Five members of the 1990 University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskie football team from Lake Lenore will be inducted into the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
