There was an enthusiastic gathering of quilters recently at the Don Ross Centre for the regular meeting of the Rivers' Edge Quilters. Some snow birds are still away enjoying sun and sand.

It's winter break this week for students. Enjoy your free time. Some families have gone on holiday, so we hope to catch up to them before next week's news. I was pleased to see some pine grosbeaks feeding in the yard this week.

It's the time of year when 4-H clubs have their public speaking sessions. Bev and Vic Hult attended the Lashburn 4-H Club's speak off held in Lashburn on the afternoon of Feb. 12. Their granddaughter Torrie Chibri was winner in her class.

Coming up on four years on the job, I was looking for a new story idea and a new way to follow the Battlefords North Stars.

This week at MHS was the last one before the February break, which began Feb. 18. Students will be returning to school Feb. 28. Our basketball teams are well into their season and working hard.

How often have any of us looked back on a decision we made in the past and questioned our sanity at the time it was made? I have done this enough times in my life I really cannot even estimate the number of times.

The most recent cold spell, a short one, took place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the past week. The temperature Sunday was again up to - 5 C where it has remained during this evening. It has been a very different winter.

At École Père Mercure celebrates "the winter carnival" with enthusiasm for heritage and French culture. At the same time the school is also able to foster a sense of community and pride.

You know literacy is important, but do you know what literacy really is? It's far more than just reading and writing. Literacy is communication. A person's ability to express themselves clearly and make sense of the world around them.

École Monseigneur Blais Morand played host to a student chess tournament Feb. 12. Sixteen student chess players from four different schools in the Battlefords participated.
