The northern and southern senior playdowns were held Feb. 10 to 13 and although their were two local teams at northerns, they will not be competing at provincials in Regina.

After the Cliff Lee bidding war, it turned out to be a pretty quiet off season. Detroit made a few moves and if Canadian slugger Justin Morneau can shake out the cobwebs from his last concussion the Twins will be in the mix.

You win some, you lose some. The Humboldt Broncos split their two away games this week, coming away from their western road trip with a loss to the Kindersley Klippers and a win over the Battlefords North Stars.

The regular season is almost over, and they're not letting up on the gas. The Humboldt Broncos scored two more wins at home this week, one over one of the strongest teams in the league this season.

North Stars, coaches and fans alike have been waiting for this to happen since the calendar turned to 2011, but perhaps two players, Blake Tatchell and Colin Phaneuf are the happiest to have shaken their slumps.

After the regular season had each team scheduled to play each other six times, the playoffs appear now to be bring out the intensity in the teams.

There's ice all around the Humboldt region, but it was the ice inside a particular building that was the focus of attention on the weekend.

Although a few were local participants, the majority came from as far away as Fort McMurray, Calgary and Edmonton, Alta. to enter the second annual Medstead Snow Drag Races Jan. 29 on the property of Randy Jones.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games are well underway and the local athletes didn't take long to get in action and perform well. Biathlete, Matthew Hudec of North Battleford finished 14th in the 15km male individual event.

They are having a banner year, but a few potholes have appeared in the road.
